Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

Hulk me

This post is part one of two dealing with subjects that have been on my mind quite a bit lately. This week I present a few songs about anger.

Lately, I have been feeling quite a bit of anger. Without going into too many useless personal details, I have been losing my patience and at times have become quite angry with many things that are somewhat out of my control. Everyone feels anger, it is how we deal with that anger that ultimately matters. My father passes along bits of wisdom he learns from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Hanh has written much on the subject of anger.

Just like our organs, our anger is part of us. When we are angry, we have to go back to ourselves and take good care of our anger. We cannot say, ‘Go away, anger, I don’t want you.’ When you have a stomachache, you don’t say, ‘I don’t want you stomach, go away.’ No, you take care of it. In the same way, we have to embrace and take good care of our anger.

I read that several years ago and immediately loved it. I love the idea of taking care of my anger. One way I take care of my anger, and many other complicated emotions, is with music. Sometimes I need a bunch of driving guitars and drums to cope; other occasions demand a more soothing approach. Enjoy this week’s selection and take care of that anger.

Neil Finn - Driving Me Mad
Rainer Maria - Never In Anger

Favorite things

CDsI was asked  by some people from work to come up with a list of cover versions of the song “My Favorite Things” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.” The list was to accompany a blog post soliciting people for comments about their favorite things.

As I searched for some interesting versions of this classic song made so popular by Julie Andrews, I found some extremely interesting ones I had never heard before. Specifically the Venezulan band Tuyero Submarin doing a great version with a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade in the beginning. I also really dig anything Negativland does, as long as you take it in small doses.

So take a moment, enjoy these tunes, and think of your favorite things.

Julie Andrews - My Favorite Things (Automaton Destructo RMX)
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
Andre 3000 - My Favorite Things
Gary Hoey - My Favorite Things
Tori Amos - My Favorite Things (live)
Hiromi’s Sonicbloom - My Favorite Things
Negativland - Favorite Things
Tuyero Submarin - Novicia tuyera (My Favorite Things)

Winter had a bad hair day.Today’s high temperature in Cleveland is supposed to be 5 degrees. Yesterday with the windchill is was -20something. Numbers aside, all I know is that it’s freezing outside. Nose hair freezing freezing. So rather than complain, as my nature usually dictates, I have chosen to embrace the cold and offer up a few songs that go along with the weather. Here’s looking to Spring!

The Cure - I’m Cold
Albert King - Cold Feet
Erasure - Love Is Colder Than Death
Kasey Chambers - Sleeping Cold

Happy birthday to me

Happy Birthday Gustav!Röyksopp - Happy Birthday

In a couple of days I will be on the other side of 35. That just seems amazing to me as I remember quite clearly thinking that turning 25 made me an old man.

This past year was a strange one. I was hospitalized for a couple of weeks, finally coming home after 4 surgeries on something that could have been fatal. A good friend passed away from melanoma, leaving behind a wife, 5 young children, and many, many friends. Mixed with the tragic was the sublime as my second child was born a couple of months ago.

Much like this past year, my birthday brings a mix of depression and joy all at once. I hope you all enjoy the following songs that I think reflect some of my current and conflicting emotions.

Cracker - Happy Birthday To Me
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
Death Cab for Cutie - No Sunlight
Andrew Bird - The Birthday Song
Cibo Matto - Birthday Cake
Jay Jay Pistolet - Happy Birthday You
Jim Boggia - On Your Birthday
The Innocence Mission - Happy Birthday
Sufjan Stevens - Happy Birthday
Bright Eyes - Happy Birthday To Me
Neil Young - Old Man
The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier
The Smiths - Unhappy Birthday
The Wedding Present - Happy Birthday (edit)
Residents - Birthday Boy
Tom Waits - I Don’t Wanna Grow Up
